Depth: Layers in Translation focuses on the unique approaches artists take in the creation of their work. Layering is an integral function in the ‘making’ process—an essential element in nearly every artwork. This exhibition highlights the distinctive ways in which subject matter emerges from process. Often, artworks are created in stages, each layer building on the last; the final result is inseparable from the steps involved. In some pieces, depth is forced or implied through masterful optical illusions. Whether through material texture in addition or subtraction, overlapping color, or subtle shifts in perspective, these works convey the transformation from process to final form.

I have long been fascinated with nature at large scale, planets, constellations, layers of the earth in geology and good old fashioned rocks. As a teen I spent the summers with my family in a charming cottage by a tiny lake in Sweet Valley Pennsylvania. It was a very quiet lake, which was not ideal for a teen in the 80's ready to do “something.” We had no tv at the lake and the internet was not even in the cradle of imaginations, so nights were slow, and dare I say boring, and the radio played a limited number of musical selections that were not really my forte.
But boredom is the incubator of creative thought and now I can look back with love. Many silent evenings I would bundle my sleeping bag and pillow and head down to the dock by the lake. The crisp mountain air, melodic sounds of cicadas, bullfrogs and water lapping at the dock posts created the perfect venue for stargazing. The remote mountain sky was very dark, perfect to lay out there for hours, scanning the skies for shooting stars and imagining what exciting things I would do in my life. Lost in my own thoughts I would sometimes fall asleep under the heavens with a dew kissed face.
Fast forward to now and I am blessed to live on another quiet lake. The night skies remind me of all the dreams I had as a teen, but none of them can compare to the journey I am taking. I don’t travel much, but through books, photographs, the internet, microscopic discoveries, the Hubble and now the James telescope; my eyes of imagination have been set on fire. I can see the discoveries of incredible formations deep within the tiniest particles expanding limitlessly to the vastness of the outer edges of space. A far cry of the glimpse from my lake cottage and dock side slumbers.
Overwhelmed by my insignificance I wondered how my tiny piece of creativity would matter. Over time and through much transformation, like geological layers forming and being carved away through time, I am slowly unearthing jewels of things that only I can create and only I can share. When putting everything into perspective I fully embrace the notion that I am pulled from the God of creation and uniquely designed to express through my work as only I can.
As every grain of sand or tiny snowflake is unique, so too every planet, star and galaxy possess a one of a kind signature that grows and continually changes. Exponential transformation is the nature of my work. Each piece reflects a point in time, but is designed to be repositioned or reconfigured. The whims of creativity are fickle. Nothing is forever on this earth, but interaction is constant. So interact with my work. Play with the table sculptures, imagine rearranging a wall sculpture or lay on the floor and stare up at the mobiles and marvel at the infinite possibilities of it all.
That’s what I do every day.

The creative process is for many an act of exploration and self-discovery. For artist Kimberlee Rocca, a self-described “Monday Girl” who loves getting to work, it’s a necessary outlet for a continuing stream of ideas needing release. When not designing custom homes for the family business she’s in the studio piecing together all the elements of her latest creation.

“I am a creature of exploration, wonder and process. Remnants, bits and pieces that don't have a home, are destined for nothing or have been discarded generate in me an intense desire to create new forms of beauty from ashes and misfits. Very little in my studio goes to waste.”

Happy Monday! I’m Kimberlee Rocca @rocca.studioart signing in from the Heartland in Solon Iowa💗 I hate to say it, but I love Mondays! My full time job is in construction. I design, draft, render and build custom homes in my area and my weeks are very unpredictable and sometimes downright chaotic. Sooooo…..Mondays always give me a fresh re-set and a new outlook for wrangling in all my hats. With 4 kids, now mostly grown, a fabulous husband, and a full time job building @roccacustomhomes I still manage to get my much needed and well deserved studio time☀️☀️☀️☀️
So yes, I love Mondays and this One is extra special because I can share it with you😊

Metals have allowed humans to create buildings, wage war, and make art. Due to its resilient nature, metal arts can be traced back thousands of years, a reminder that people have an instinctive desire to create things, not only for practical purposes, but also for aesthetic value. The Fourth Iowa Metal Guild Exhibition is a celebration of the rich diversity and immense talent in both the Iowa and Taiwan metal arts communities. These disparate groups are connected by the organizer of this exhibition, Professor Kee-Ho Yuen from the University of Iowa. Professor Yuen views his own metalwork as an evolving collage of the influences of East and West, and this exhibition demonstrates his commitment to encouraging metal artists around the world.
All the artists in this exhibition have some connection to Iowa, either by way of having lived here or having been taught by an Iowa metals artist. The works showcased in these galleries range from wearable to sculptural and use a wide variety of technical processes and materials to achieve each unique piece. The diversity of materials and processes reflects the extraordinary range and creativity of contemporary metal arts.
Exhibition season support has been provided by the Hotel-Motel Tax Fund, the Program Grant Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, members of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, and contributors to the Museum’s Annual Fund.
