I have long been fascinated with nature at large scale, planets, constellations, layers of the earth in geology and good old fashioned rocks. As a teen I spent the summers with my family in a charming cottage by a tiny lake in Sweet Valley Pennsylvania. It was a very quiet lake, which was not ideal for a teen in the 80's ready to do “something.” We had no tv at the lake and the internet was not even in the cradle of imaginations, so nights were slow, and dare I say boring, and the radio played a limited number of musical selections that were not really my forte.
But boredom is the incubator of creative thought and now I can look back with love. Many silent evenings I would bundle my sleeping bag and pillow and head down to the dock by the lake. The crisp mountain air, melodic sounds of cicadas, bullfrogs and water lapping at the dock posts created the perfect venue for stargazing. The remote mountain sky was very dark, perfect to lay out there for hours, scanning the skies for shooting stars and imagining what exciting things I would do in my life. Lost in my own thoughts I would sometimes fall asleep under the heavens with a dew kissed face.
Fast forward to now and I am blessed to live on another quiet lake. The night skies remind me of all the dreams I had as a teen, but none of them can compare to the journey I am taking. I don’t travel much, but through books, photographs, the internet, microscopic discoveries, the Hubble and now the James telescope; my eyes of imagination have been set on fire. I can see the discoveries of incredible formations deep within the tiniest particles expanding limitlessly to the vastness of the outer edges of space. A far cry of the glimpse from my lake cottage and dock side slumbers.
Overwhelmed by my insignificance I wondered how my tiny piece of creativity would matter. Over time and through much transformation, like geological layers forming and being carved away through time, I am slowly unearthing jewels of things that only I can create and only I can share. When putting everything into perspective I fully embrace the notion that I am pulled from the God of creation and uniquely designed to express through my work as only I can.
As every grain of sand or tiny snowflake is unique, so too every planet, star and galaxy possess a one of a kind signature that grows and continually changes. Exponential transformation is the nature of my work. Each piece reflects a point in time, but is designed to be repositioned or reconfigured. The whims of creativity are fickle. Nothing is forever on this earth, but interaction is constant. So interact with my work. Play with the table sculptures, imagine rearranging a wall sculpture or lay on the floor and stare up at the mobiles and marvel at the infinite possibilities of it all.
That’s what I do every day.
